Congratulations to everyone who ran the Bath Half over the weekend to help raise much-needed funds for Baby Check Bath.

Baby Check Bath offers a free-of-charge osteopathic service to mothers and babies in BANES who may be experiencing difficulties.

Our service enables these families to receive gentle hands-on treatment. Monies raised from the Bath Half Marathon go directly to funding this valuable osteopathic treatment for local newborns and mums.

A huge thank you to Lisa King who ran to give back to Baby Check. In Lisa’s own words ‘because I wanted show my gratitude for all the help and support during the 1st few weeks of my daughter’s life. I was a single mother so finances weren’t great, the fact that the charity was able to help and support with that made such a difference. Such a great experience for both of us. I am extremely grateful.’

Bath Half 2025 is on the 16th March and we will be looking for runners to join our team.

On Your Bike!

Many of our practitioners here at Stillpoint don’t need an excuse to go for a bike ride; plenty of them already cycle to work. It’s not just the Osteopaths & acupuncturists who arrive on two wheels; some of our patients cycle to their appointments as well.

Stillpoint Osteopaths often recommend cycling to patients, on a road bike or static bike, as a great form of exercise. Electric bikes help with the hills of Bath & allow for covering greater distances more easily whilst still getting you out for some exercise!

Cycling helps builds up strength in the core, lower back & leg muscles, all important muscles providing support for the spine & in the longer term helping to reduce strain on the knees & hips.

There are secure bike racks directly in front of the Stillpoint building; just bring your lock along. Covered bike racks are also available, around the corner behind the bee hives.

Cycle to Work Day aims to raise awareness of the benefits of cycling, from reduced stress levels to getting fitter; just watch out for the hills in Bath!

As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, the incidents of colds and coughs increase.

On average adults can have 2-3 colds a year and children up to 6-10 a year, presenting with symptoms such as sore throat, runny or blocked nose, sneezing and coughing, fatigue, headaches and even swollen lymph nodes.

The common cold is caused by viruses which can affect the linings of the nose, throat, sinuses and bronchial tubes. The viruses can inflame the cells of the linings and irritate the sympathetic nerves. These nerves may cause the production of mucus causing blocked nose and sinus problems and tightening of the muscles of the neck and back. The resulting congestion of blood and lymphatic fluids can cause further systemic congestion.

The reflex of coughing and sneezing uses respiratory muscles that can become increasingly sore and fatigued. If this is prolonged, the muscles can become tight and pull on ribs causing strains in the ribcage.

There is no cure for the common cold; however, Osteopathy may help alleviate the symptoms and speed up recovery by looking at the causes. Stimulation of the lymph and blood circulation and improving immune function response can help. Treatment may consist of soft tissue massage, muscle stretching, joint mobilisation and lymphatic drainage techniques.

Treatment releasing spinal joint restrictions aims to normalise the function of the nervous system, reduce muscle spasm pain and mucus production. This can help with congestion by improving venous and lymphatic drainage and help the body to return to a more optimal level of health.

Osteopathy can also help support the innate self-regulating healing processes of the body as well as aiding a greater sense of well-being and relaxation.

Additionally here are a few ways to help you – Have more rest, drink plenty of water and take paracetamol if you have a temperature.
